What is an equirectangular 360° image?
If you have opened a 360 photograph outside a tour viewer, you have seen an equirectangular projection: an unusually stretched image with a 2:1 aspect ratio, for example 8,000 × 4,000 pixels.
That flat file holds all the information needed to reconstruct the full sphere. Virtual-tour software maps it onto the inside of a virtual sphere — imagine standing inside a giant ball with the photograph projected onto its interior. That is essentially how every 360 viewer works.
